The shocking arrest of ex-prime minister Imran Khan on 9th May (Tuesday) and crowded mobs forced the authorities to shut down the usage of internet services in the whole country. According to recently gathered reports, more than a hundred million people faced gruelling and pessimistic experiences in the suspension of three-day mobile phone internet services.
Moreover, the reports claim daily wagers who put food to the table on a daily basis through ridesharing and food delivery services face distressing and unacceptable situations. The local public even raises their voice against the closure of internet services in the country by using VPN (Virtual private network) of nearby countries. Thus, after the restoration of the internet services and reopening of blocked social media platforms, reports about misfortune incidents of daily wagers went trending on digital media.
This is not the first time the country has faced these miserable and poor encounters that have only affected the lower classes and daily wagers. Political protests and mob violence have been part of Pakistan’s political history. However, this is the first time that the arrest of political leaders has caused the stop of mobile broadband internet services.
Three days after the arrest of the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, current interior minister Rana Sanaullah supported the restriction on the internet and various social media channels. According to him, the shutdown of the internet will continue till “all miscreants are arrested.” Talking to the media, he further added
“We have to take into consideration that people who do not misuse the internet are facing disturbance.”.
The press conference of Rana Sahib clearly backed the decision to take down the internet services. Moreover, during the Q&A sessions with the media reporters, the interior minister also shared the detailed case factors behind the arrest of Khan.
Furthermore, the news of the internet crash and shutdown of the social media platforms broke after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and more than one hundred links, were switched off due to current political encounters between ruling and opposition parties in the country.
