A donkey is the most innocent animal on earth. You would burden him with loads of stuff and still, he won’t say a word. He would keep on carrying your load and would cry in silence for all the pain he has to bear for being a donkey.
But what if the donkey starts speaking? What would be his words? The book “Ek Gadhe Ki Sarguzasht” is a social satire of a Donkey. He doesn’t have any name or nickname. He’s only known as “Gadha” and even his forefathers are known by the same word.
This donkey love to read books but his love for exploration and hunger for knowledge made him fired from his job and he moved to a new place and was given to a Launderer. He became loyal to his owner and started helping him to carry his load. In return, all he eats is grass and some leafy vegetables. Although he has one job but he’s never late nor lazy and never refused to carry more burden. Since he’s a Gadha so he’s not even allowed for it. And there are no rights for donkeys in India and Pakistan.
So, one day his owner died and this saddened the innocent animal to the core. When the donkey saw his owner’s widow weeping for daily wages, he decided to take a step to resume his pension from the government.
But as he started his journey, he was amazed by the double standards of society. According to him, he felt that more than him, there’s a whole society of donkeys living as humans. He was shocked to see the shortcomings of politicians.
This book was written in 1967 and amazingly you’ll find it relevant today still. Since the donkey is wise and an avid reader so people are amazed by his wisdom which also brings him fame and trouble at the same time. The author Krishan Chander has done a splendid job of writing this book. Once you start reading, you aren’t going to stop until it ends.
The book is a brilliant satire. It will keep you entertained throughout. Filled with humor, it will also make you realize the hypocrisy, bigotry, greed, and shallowness of society. Since the donkey is wise, his survival becomes tough among all the donkeys of society. He has to face harsh critics but once people understand his wisdom, they kneel down to him.
Sir Krishan has penned 84 books in total and this is one of the best of his works. In reality, if hasn’t done so much work, Ek Gadhe Ki Sarguzasht was enough to give him his credits in the field of Hindi Literature.
To sum it up, I must say it’s an easy and must-read book for everyone. You can find this book at these online bookstores in Pakistan.
